Intel and Kaskus top Indonesia's Digital Brand Index

Late last week, IndoPacific Edelman and Brandtology announced that Intel and AMD top the list of brands most discussed online by Indonesians and that Kaskus and Twitter are the top two sites for technology discussions.

These results are from the first quarterly Asia Pacific Digital Brand Index for Indonesia. The DBI is a way to measure a brand’s prominence in online conversations across several hundred websites. This research aims to transform quantitative data from 51 of the largest technology companies in Indonesia into an insight on the primary brands and topics that generate online discussions.

IP Edelman and Brandtology tracked online conversations between July and September 2009 on more than 469 sites including various social networking sites, message boards, Facebook, news sites and blogs. It found that Intel tops the list of brands with 5,743 mentions, followed by AMD with 4,971. Third on the list was Google with 4,427.

Nine out of the top 10 brands were companies with significant inroads into the mobile industry although surprisingly, Indonesia’s largest mobile telecommunications company, Telkomsel, did not make it to the top ten. The rest of the list are Asus, Nokia, Microsoft, Acer, Indosat, Blackberry, and Excelcomindo (XL).

It is important to note that DBI does not measure brand sentiment, or at least not yet. Nanda Ivens, Director of Digital at IndoPacific Edelman, during a discussion of the results at Pacific Place, said that everyone knows that XL has been on the receiving end of some negative feedback regarding the quality of their service and as a result shot up to number 10 on the list. Ivens commented that future versions of the survey may consider taking sentiments into account for further detail and more insightful breakdowns of the results.

The index also revealed that that Kaskus (77.1%), the Indonesian online message board with the largest number of active users dominates the top ten websites that talks about technology and brands. Twitter (8.95%) and MacClubIndonesia (2.49%) are the only non Kaskus sites on the top ten list.

It is unfortunate that Kaskus, a site with dozens of forums are separated on the list into its individual forums although a more aggregated breakdown may be less relevant due to the very low percentages received by other sites. Collectively though, a combination of all news sites edges Twitter to second place with 9.65% while blogs are placed 4th.

As Indonesia’s internet-connected population grows, online engagement of customers are rising in importance. Data from Indonesia’s ISP association (APJII) say up to 35 million Indonesians are on the internet. Facebook users account for 10 million users and growing fast, Friendster users are around 8 million. Mig33, a chat service for Nokia Symbian users have around 9 million users, while Twitter, the hottest kid on the block managed to grab 1.5 million Indonesian accounts according to data from Google AdPlanner.

Facebook fails to break into the top 10 because it is simply not where conversations about technology happens, at least not on a significant enough scale. Tech mavens are far more engaging on forums and on Twitter although Ivens also mentioned that household brands have a significant showing in Facebook.

While currently this is only for technology companies and brands, the Digital Brand Index door may be opened for non-tech companies in the future.

Twitter via SMS is back in Indonesia

If you've been meaning to try Twitter as it was meant to be used, Twitter is now available again via SMS in Indonesia. It's certainly not something that hardcore Twitter users would use but if you just want to get your feet wet in the twitter stream, this could be a good place to start.

I've used Twitter via SMS before back in 2007 before they yanked the service globally because it was getting way too expensive for them to deal with. The experience was certainly different and it encourages you to be much less conversational. While it's practical for updating what you're doing at that moment, it's not something I would use as the main way to tweet. Also, back then it cost an international rate of Rp. 500 per message because you had to send the SMS to a UK number. Now it's local and it's free.

The catch is you have to be using Three (Tri) as your provider. Oh and it doesn't support reply threads which would suck if you got a reply and you forgot the topic. You might need to clean up your SMS storage a bit more often if you decide to hit full time tweeting via SMS. The good news is you can select which tweets to receive. I'll leave you to check out the details for yourself.

Okezone pretends a Microsoft ad is an article

Indonesian text behind the link. This is good for a laugh. 8 reasons for moving to PC by Okezone.

Some gems:

"Sembilan dari sepuluh komputer menggunakan sistem operasi Windows atau lainnya"
"Nine out of ten computers use Windows or other operating system"
Great, what does the other one run on, peanuts?

"Windows menawarkan lebih banyak jenis hiburan melalui beragam fitur yang dimilikinya dan bisa langsung dinikmati, sementara Mac tidak. "
"Windows offers more types of entertainment through its many features that can be immediately enjoyed while Mac does not."
You mean like Minesweeper and Solitaire?

"Beberapa situs hanya bisa diakses dengan sempurna melalui browser Internet Explorer yang ada pada Windows. Beberapa situs yang ada di internet membutuhkan aplikasi tambahan untuk bisa memunculkannya. Namun dengan Windows, hal tersebut tidak dibutuhkan"
"Some sites can only be accessed perfectly using Internet Explorer browser in Windows. Some sites on the Internet require add-ons to display them. But with Windows, it's not necessary."
So when you run Windows you don't need to install a PDF plugin, update your Flash plugin, install a QuickTime add-on, install a DivX or XviD plugin and all the other plugins on your browser?

[update] I've just discovered that that piece from Okezone was an incomplete and unattributed rip off of this piece by HarryMcCracken who also posted the opposite view, "Eight reasons why your next computer should be a Mac."

Strange figures re: Indonesian iPhone 3G

Detik reported that while Telkomsel has had 39 thousand pre-orders for its iPhone 3G, it only has 10 thousand units of Apple's phone in stock. While this is typical of initial position of a new product, the other numbers revealed by Telkomsel show that someone isn't that good at maths.

Out of 10 thousand units, four thousand have been earmarked for Jakarta and the other six thousand are intended for Bandung, Surabaya, Medan, and Makassar during Telkomsel's roadshow.

In another article, Telkomsel claimed to have had an average of 2000 people per day over the three day launch. Simple maths say they would have sold six thousand over three days but it's pretty clear that was not the case if they only had allocated 4000 units for Jakarta because that means the phones have been sold out in Jakarta or Telkomsel simply took allocation from other areas, leaving 4000 to be distributed to the other four cities.

I'm not disputing Detik in this case because the numbers come from Telkomsel directly.

In any case, this kind of telecommunications product launch seems to have been a first in Indonesia as there has never been a massive interest in a single product over such a short period for as long as I can remember. Indosat M2's mobile broadband launch comes to mind but it was staggered over several months back in late 2006.

New iPhone 3G postpaid plan from Telkomsel

This morning I received an email from Telkomsel explaining the purchase method for iPhone 3G. From what I read it's not as straight forward as one would expect.

Please note that this may be a customized email for non-Kartu Halo customers, including prepaid Telkomsel and subscribers to other operators.

Prepaid for everyone
So basically everybody is supposed to sign up for the prepaid option initially. Yes, you read it right, everyone sign up for prepaid, which costs Rp. 9.6 million for the 8GB and Rp. 11.2 million for the 16GB. Expensive? Depends on how you see it. This already includes monthly 500MB of data plan from Telkomsel for one year which costs Rp. 125,000 per month according to this table from Telkomsel.

This means the iPhone itself, discounting the data plan costs Rp. 8.1 million for the 8GB and Rp. 9.7 million for the 16GB which is inline with how much the phones cost in Hong Kong, except if you purchase it there it's not locked to any carrier. With Telkomsel the phone is locked.

Naturally, you cannot separate the data plan from the phone. You will get it regardless and you will get a prepaid Simpati number.

Now, what if you want a post paid plan?

After you sign up for a prepaid iPhone 3G, you fill in an application form to be transferred to a post paid plan of your choice. Telkomsel will then assess your credit rating for approval. If you are approved, in 7 working days they will activate your new plan and you will be given double your data allowance.

This means if you choose the Turbo or Turbo Plus plan, your 500MB allowance goes to 1GB, Turbo Premium accounts get 2GB instead of 1GB.

Unfortunately Telkomsel did not make it clear whether this scheme is only for those who buy their iPhone 3G this weekend or if it's also applicable to those who purchase from Monday. Hopefully more confirmation will come before 8:00 p.m today.

This is also rather sneaky on their part because this new email basically says your only option is to pay 9 or 11 million up front.

If you have an existing Telkomsel number (Kartu Halo, Simpati, or even As), you can transfer your iPhone 3G plan to your current number by sending an sms from your new number to 1377. Type: transfer 081xxxxxxxxx where 081xxxxxxxxx is your current number.

This seems to mean that your Simpati number will have to be activated first. I will try to confirm this today.

Don't forget, anyone in Jakarta can come and be part of the launch event today from 8:00p.m at One Pacific Place, Sudirman CBD. People are going to be lining up well before that. I'll be on the scene probably from 5:00 p.m for the live tweet.

Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme on AppleStore

As some people know, the reason Apple and Apple resellers have not been selling standalone wireless n devices in Indonesia is because Indonesian regulations covering radio frequencies still prohibit private use of the 5GHz frequency by individuals without an explicit license.

Most notebooks however already have 802.11n technology built in including Apple's. I think these devices have some sort of special permissions because they are not dedicated wireless routers.

You may have seen wireless n routers being sold all over Jakarta and other Indonesian cities but they have not been approved or even certified by the relevant government department. You know where I was going with that don't you?

So it was with great surprise when I saw the brand new Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme listed on Apple's Online Store for Indonesia. However when I click on each of the two links, I got set to a blank page. As you can see on the screenshot, the link for Time Capsule leads to a null page.

If this was an oversight on Apple's part, why didn't they just not include the two images? Have them changed to something else perhaps? Will Apple have them in Indonesia finally or will they delist them from the site in the next few hours or days? We'll find out soon enough.
