Twitter partners with Axis in Indonesia

I had a feeling something was up a couple of months ago when Three announced their Twitter by SMS feature. They pushed it hard and even collaborating with @infoll, and @lewatmana to co-promote their services during the Idul Fitri homecoming period. However there was no peep from Mashable or even on Twitter's own blog. Today, Twitter's Director of Mobile Products and Partnerships Kevin Thau announced that they're partnering with Axis (@axisgsm) to provide Twitter's SMS services in Indonesia.

This pretty much confirms that Three's Twitter service was not official. If you send via SMS, normally it would show up as a tweet sent via txt but with Three, it's via TwitPakeTri. Bottom line, does it matter if it's official? Not really, it just means that now there are two providers that let you use Twitter via SMS.

How Joko Anwar got Circle K to the top of Twitter trending topics

Earlier today around 2 pm west Indonesia time, renowned Indonesian movie director and screenwriter Joko Anwar tweeted that he was going to go into a Circle K naked if his twitter account reaches 3000 followers. In barely any time at all, that tweet was retweeted so many times that it pushed "Circle K" into the top of trending topic within a few minutes and baffled a lot of Twitter users around the globe.

The fact that he tweeted in English helped everyone around the globe understand what the whole fuss was about and joined in the fun, retweeting his "challenge" out of control and followed @jokoanwar en masse. Within one hour, his 1000 followers had ballooned to more than 3500, and as of this writing, had reached over 7300. That's under 5 hours.

Most of the people though won't actually be able to see him do it but they're all interested if he was going to go ahead with his claim. Of course, plans for documentation on Flickr and YouTube is set in motion but that remains to be seen what with the new Indonesian film law that was just passed a few weeks ago. Ironically, Anwar is one of the strongest opponents of the draconian law.

Now, this whole stunt had drawn other claims saying he would run naked at PIM (Pondok Indah Mall) but he never actually said it. This was in fact a prank claim by @hasief which again took a life of its own similar to the original claim. There is no truth to this one. Regardless, PIM made it into trending topic within a short time.

Will the outspoken director follow through with his challenge now that he's got more than twice the target? We'll soon find out. He said he's going to do it tonight although no word as to where and exactly when.

Circle K certainly got quite an exposure today and Indonesian Twitter users certainly figured out how to get topics to trend on Twitter. It's just a matter of numbers.

See what people are saying about… Twitter!

"Twitter has moved from simple social networking into a new kind of communication and a valuable source of timely information. Also, it's fun."

No longer does Twitter ask you to share what you are doing, they now urge you to share what you think about a certain topic, what is happening around you, and let you find out about current events.

Twitter is the place for breaking news.

Twitter = Sims

"Much like how The Sims allows you to become someone else for a little while, Twitter has that same power but in a real environment, not a virtual one. When you first join Twitter, you have a fresh start; the same way your sim begins his or her life in the game."

Apple to buy Twitter?

Valleywag drops the bomb, says Apple is in final stage of negotiations to buy Twitter for $700 million, a deal to be announced at WWDC in San Fransisco on June 8 according to one insider source.

Well, well, well, two of my favorite subjects possibly coming together. Facebook and Google were rebuffed, Twitter guys have said they want to be independent.

I agree with Gawker's Owen Thomas. I don't see it, unless Apple is looking to reverse their ways when it comes to web initiatives. We all know Apple has been a rather reluctant player in the world of open web and anything they've done that has anything to do with the web has been tied to some sort of revenue stream. Let me just mention .Mac, Mobile Me, iWork.com. They even charged for iChat if you did not upgrade your OS a few years ago.

Not Twitter. All their staff are accessible via Twitter's network, most visible being @ev, @biz, and @jack, the three head honchos, most things they do they explain on their blog, and hardly anything they've done with Twitter on the web is making serious revenue. Apple doesn't really do "free".

Either we wait for Twitter rebuffing the (rumored) deal yet again or we wait for June 8 to pass (June 9 in most parts of the planet)

I'm more interested in the part where they said, "A source who's plugged into the Valley's deal scene and has been recruited by Apple for a senior position…"

Was this recently? If so, anyone between the three new recruits (Papermaster, Drebin, Koduri)?

What’s Caused All the Flutter Over Twitter?

It seems that the hottest name in tech town these days is Twitter and no one can resist talking about it. From New York to Los Angeles, from Silicon Valley to Tinseltown, from Melbourne to London, Twitter has them all aflutter. What began as a side project by the founders of popular blogging site Blogger.com is now a global phenomenon.

Twitter is still tiny compared to more well-known social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace, but it is grabbing far more attention than the other two combined. Recently, Facebook claimed a user base of roughly 200 million people, enough to make it the world’s sixth most populous nation after Indonesia. Twitter’s number of users, on the other hand, is comparable to that of Jakarta’s population during a busy day.

AIR: A runtime for Twitter clients?

The most interesting product of Twitter’s popularity, to me, has been the explosion of Twitter API client software. There are a slew of cross-platform Adobe Air-based clients, including Twhirl and TweetDeck. TweetDeck in particular appears to be the most popular interface for Twitter other than the Twitter.com web site. (One could be forgiven for assuming the entire point of Air is to serve as a runtime for cross-platform Twitter clients.)

Worldwide Twitter Population

I came across some numbers via TechCrunch regarding traffic to Twitter.com. According to comScore, one of the companies that monitor online traffic and usage, there were 19.1 million worldwide visitors to Twitter's website in March 2009. Visitors in this regard does not mean unique users and it may have counted repeat visitors. In February the figure was 9.8 million worldwide.

TechCrunch also noted that this number excludes those who use Twitter from 3rd party applications. Figures obtained from Tweetstats  show that 58% of Twitter users use the web interface while the rest use 3rd party applications or websites. Of note, TweetDeck garnered nearly 10%, Twitterfeed 10% and Tweetie 4.3% (it does not differentiate between Tweetie for Mac and iPhone), Twitterrific, once King of Twitter applications both on Mac and iPhone is nowhere in sight.

Going by the above numbers, if 19.1 million users makes up only 58% of the traffic, this means there may be more than 30 million Twitter users in the world.
