What’s Caused All the Flutter Over Twitter?

It seems that the hottest name in tech town these days is Twitter and no one can resist talking about it. From New York to Los Angeles, from Silicon Valley to Tinseltown, from Melbourne to London, Twitter has them all aflutter. What began as a side project by the founders of popular blogging site Blogger.com is now a global phenomenon.

Twitter is still tiny compared to more well-known social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace, but it is grabbing far more attention than the other two combined. Recently, Facebook claimed a user base of roughly 200 million people, enough to make it the world’s sixth most populous nation after Indonesia. Twitter’s number of users, on the other hand, is comparable to that of Jakarta’s population during a busy day.

It doesn't really matter because Twitter is about being immersed.
Naturally not a lot of people "get" Twitter. 40% retention rate is
certainly not high when Facebook and Myspace keep 70% of its members.
Those who understand Twitter stay around and enjoy the company, those
who don't, don't feel they've missed out.

While 60% leave after the first month, there hasn't been a follow up
research that tries to find out how many return. I've seen many
inactive accounts come back to life after weeks, months, even years,
as the owners realize what Twitter's about.

The fact is, Facebook is feeling the heat when it has absolutely no
reason to. It is far more successful and expansive than Twitter yet it
is remodeling itself after Twitter. 200 million vs less than 20
million, 70% retention vs 40% retention. Facebook must be seeing
things huh?
